Director's Take

Acts of Service
I recently learned that my primary love language is Acts of Service. Yes, I know these languages have been around for decades, so I’m slow to the game… but it was an eye opener for me that sometimes what we want in a personal relationship is also true in our professions.
I have wanted to be in public service since I was in college (i.e., for a LONG time) and it is very telling that what I want someone to do for me personally is also what I want to do for our community. Without acts of service, communities just wouldn’t be what they are.
Consider the “mothers” and “fathers” of our community in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and into the 90s… who invested their own money and sweat equity to build public spaces, beautifully designed buildings, and rally the public around policies and programs that have become engrained in our city.
Or the people who help facilitate connections which lead to a partnership, or people who make government processes easier, or people who pick up garbage as they head to their next meeting.
Acts of service are all around us, big and small, but we need more. Let’s be sure to call them out to celebrate what our city means to all of us; we will never be a great city until all of us feel compelled to be a part of its future.
Whatever your love language, please consider more acts of service for our community.
