Performing Arts

07-20-2023

Did you know that we are home to all five major performing arts groups (opera, ballet, orchestra, repertory theater, and children’s theater)? And that this is unusual for a city our size? This puts us in the same league as less than a dozen other cities in the country, such as Boston, New York City, LA and other such sized cities. This is not only a major bragging point but it’s also an incredible opportunity for us to take advantage of high culture in our hometown!

Louisvillians are so lucky to have such a rich choice of the arts from which to choose. These groups attract regional and sometimes national audiences and it’s a solid feather in our cap when we are recruiting companies or talent to Louisville. Whether you enjoy any or none of these cultural outlets, having them here means that there are reasons for people to visit or locate to Louisville and that is something to celebrate.

The best part… they all perform Downtown! Make no mistake about why their practice and performance spaces are in the one neighborhood that is accessible and welcome to everyone; they want to provide the most access and Downtown is the place to do it. From Teddy Abrams leading the Louisville Orchestra through the soundtrack of a movie, to holiday favorites such as the Louisville Ballet’s The Nutcracker or Actors Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, our performing arts scene is second to none.

And here’s how we punch above our weight… the creative team of the new musical, Ali, was just in town last week. For a nationally touring Broadway show. Telling the story of our hometown hero. Through the arts.

Take pride in your hometown, and get to the streets soon!
