Date(s) In Effect: March 22, 2019 8:00 pm - April 6, 2019 5:00 am
Beginning March 21, 2019
Several lanes will be closed in Downtown Louisville to install rigging and work platforms to paint Clark Memorial Bridge.
Clark Memorial Bridge closure on March 21, 2019 for the entire night beginning at 8 p.m. The bridge will be reopened by 5 a.m. Closure is to install rigging and work platforms on the Clark Memorial Bridge where the structure crosses over Interstate 64, River Road and Second Street. This work will require lane closures on I-64 and full closures of River Road and Second Street. All of these closures will be during nighttime hours and will last approximately two weeks, weather permitting.
Beginning Thursday, March 21, 2019, there will be lane closures on Interstate 64 under the bridge (mile marker 4.7) from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Also, eastbound River Road will be closed between Second Street and Third Street adjacent to the KFC YUM! Center and Second Street will be closed under the bridge between Witherspoon Street and River Road. These lane closures will be in place from 8 p.m. each night until 6 a.m. the following morning.
There are some exceptions to this schedule such as Thunder Over Louisville and Kentucky Derby week. In addition, KYTC has coordinated with the KFC YUM! Center since the closures started last fall to keep the Clark Memorial Bridge open following select University of Louisville men’s basketball games and events in an effort to reduce traffic impacts. The northbound lane of the bridge will remain open to expedite the flow of traffic after the events end. That lane will close once the majority of the traffic has exited the area surrounding the KFC YUM! Center. The contractor could close the bridge after that time, which could be well after midnight. However, this shortened closure time limits the amount of work that the contractor can perform.
For the upcoming NCAA basketball tournament games, the U of L women’s basketball game on Friday, March 22 is during the day. The bridge is scheduled to close that night. The NCAA men’s basketball games on Thursday, March 28 are anticipated to be played in the evenings. The schedule is not set yet for the games on Saturday, March 30. Currently, the contractor plans to cancel work completely for those two nights. If something changes with that schedule, we will send out an advisory.
Please understand that with construction projects there are sometimes last minute changes in work schedules for a variety of reasons. KYTC will notify the public through local media outlets, the KYTC website and KYTC social media. KYTC will not be sending updates for minor schedule changes such as the closure being delayed by an hour or the bridge being reopened an hour earlier.
Whenever the contractor plans to leave the bridge open all night due to inclement weather, major events at the KFC Yum! Center, or for other construction related issues, KYTC will sent out an advisory as soon as possible. If this decision is made after 5 pm on weekdays or on weekends, notification will be provided on KYTC Facebook and Twitter accounts.
