Louisville, Ky. — It’s not an April Fool’s Day prank. Kentucky's Largest Disco Ball made its debut at Fourth Street Live today, with Mayor Greg Fischer issuing a proclamation that April 1, 2016 is “Disco Ball Day” in Louisville, KY.
Fischer was joined by Metro Council President David Yates and members of the “Board of Ballers,” who managed the funding, construction, and marketing of the project, and also sought community partners to help make Kentucky's Largest Disco Ball a reality.
The group plans to use Kentucky's Largest Disco Ball to draw support for local nonprofits and charitable causes. The first of such efforts is a partnership with the Kentucky Derby Festival that includes displaying Kentucky’s Largest Disco Ball at the Kroger Fest-a-Ville℠ on the Waterfront April 23 through May 6.
“The Kentucky Derby Festival has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to community causes through its foundation, and has also served as a catalyst for corporate and individual support of efforts that improve the community,” says Kevin Jaggers, a Board of Ballers founding member, attorney, and co-owner of Alltrade Service Solutions. “We see partnering with the Kentucky Derby Festival as a great way connect with numerous non-profit organizations and raise awareness and support for their missions.”
Funded primarily by Alltrade Service Solutions and constructed by W.M. Kelley Company, Inc. metal fabricators, Kentucky's Largest Disco Ball measures more than 11 feet in diameter. The board looks forward to engaging the community to identify meaningful partnerships in an effort to raise the funds and support necessary to build the World’s Largest Disco Ball while positively impacting the community. Kentucky’s Largest Disco Ball is part of the Board of Ballers' quest to one day build the World's Largest Disco Ball in Louisville, KY. This local group – made up of professionals who work in construction, engineering, legal, non-profit, and marketing – is raising funds for a ball that will surpass the size of the current world record holder in England, which measures 33 feet in diameter. The Board of Ballers envisions that it will offer major economic development, tourism, and marketing potential for the city.
“Given that during the Disco era, about 90 percent of all disco balls were made in Louisville by Omega National Products, it would be a point of civic pride to have the World's Largest Disco Ball here as well,” says Jaggers. “We want it to represent the energy, innovation, spirit, and weirdness that make Louisville such a great city. We know it's an ambitious goal but with community support we can achieve it.”
