RESURFACED™ THE LIBERTY BUILD TO LAUNCH FALL SEASON WITH 5-A-SIDE SOCCER FIELD GRAND OPENING TOURNAMENT

Building Community & Connecting Neighborhoods

(Louisville, KY) – City Collaborative (CC) has announced ReSurfaced™ The Liberty Build will open on September 8th at 5:00 p.m. for the 2016 fall run. ReSurfaced ™ The Liberty Build continues to transform the three-quarter-acre formerly vacant lot on the corner of East Liberty and South Shelby Street into a community activation space that fosters civic engagement and entrepreneurialism. CC will literally kick-off the first weekend with a Louisville City Football Club (LCFC) two-day tournament which begins opening day.

An exciting new component for ReSurfaced™ The Liberty Build is the addition of a 5-A-Side soccer field, an urban prototype for Louisville, popular in Europe and growing in popularity in the U.S. This fast-paced, high-scoring version of soccer is played on a smaller field (90 ft. x 60 ft.) which allows for shorter engaging and accessible games. "We will be working with local soccer groups and organizations, to create a wide variety of youth activities and community tournaments. Our first tournament will kick off with the Louisville City Football Club, with others to follow that will include the tech and international community. Our 5-A-Side soccer field offers the people of Louisville a new version of soccer that we hope expands into many other spaces throughout the city,” said Dave Durand, President of Forest Giant, and co-founder and President of City Collaborative.

"We are thrilled to partner with City Collaborative on this project,” said LCFC team President Amanda Duffy. “This purpose built field extends a unique and exciting opportunity to engage with the Louisville community and allows us to bring more soccer to the new and longtime supporters of the sport.”

In addition to the urban soccer field, ReSurfaced™ enthusiasts will note the addition of the new Forest Giant community workshop center, as well as a new presence from Brown-Forman’s latest brand; Coopers’ Craft bourbon. The local company will have their own ReSurfaced™ shipping container that will serve as a craftsmanship showcase featuring Jason Cohen, a wood artisan who uses recycled bourbon barrels to create unique furniture and accessories. Ramsi’s Café on the World will serve as the food and beverage operator for the fall season and will bring diverse international flavors to the ReSurfaced™ menu.

Jecorey “1200” Arthur, nationally recognized hip hop artist and Hite Elementary music teacher will again serve as Program Director for his fourth ReSurfaced™ and will curate the two-month event. “Expect everything from dance battles, to fashion shows, to live music by your favorite local bands,” said Arthur.

The site for ReSurfaced™ The Liberty Build is owned by the Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA). According to LMHA’s Executive Director, Tim Barry, “we strongly support this dynamic form of development in the area, which is a great complement to the nationally recognized redevelopment of Liberty Green.” CC and LMHA will partner to provide opportunities for LMHA’s youth to participate.

As with past ReSurfaced™ initiatives, CC’s focus is to transform an underutilized space and create a place where people can come together and celebrate Louisville, its people, and the organizations that make Louisville great. A wide variety of community partners committed to supporting the latest ReSurfaced™ initiative include: Louisville Downtown Partnership; Louisville Metro; Louisville Metro Housing Authority; U of L’s Urban Design Studio; Forest Giant; Core Design; 1200LLC; Magbooth; Brown-Forman; WORK Architecture & Design; Architectural Artisans; Gresham, Smith and Partners; De Montfort University, Leicester UK; SlowFood Bluegrass; Falls City Lighting; Louisville City Football Club; Kentucky Refugee Ministries; Mercer Transportation; LG&E; Louisville Water Company; MSD; West Sixth Brewing Company; Ramsi’s Café on the World; Heine Brothers’ Coffee; State Champs; Adamson Properties; City Scott; Community Wireless; Stradegy; Louisville Visual Arts; and Patrick Henry Landscape Architects.
